Recipe: Onion Sesame Bagels

I made these bagels from scratch for the first time. It was pretty easy and they do not have to rise (can qualify as a quick bread). It's chewy and it's got flavor. You can substitute onions for cranberries, or frozen blueberries.

Onion Sesame Bagels
(Yield: makes about a dozen)

INGREDIENTS:

1 package dry yeast
1/2 cup warm water
1 tsp sugar

1 cup warm water
3 cups flour
1 tbsp sugar
3 tbsp dried onion flakes
3/4 tsp salt

1 cup flour

1 egg, beaten
sesame seeds

PREPARATION:

1) Preheat oven to 400F.

2) Soften yeast in 1/2 cup of water and sugar until the yeast starts to foam. Place yeast mixture in a large bowl for mixing.

3) Add in the next 5 ingredients (water, flour, sugar, dried onion flakes, and salt) and beat using an electric mixer for about 3 minutes until dough is very smooth.

4) Slowly beat the remaining 1 cup of flour until blended. If you don't have a mixer, you can knead the dough until it is blended and smooth.

5) Place dough onto a lightly floured board. Divide dough into 12 pieces. Roll each piece into 1/2-inch thick rope. Pinch the ends together to form a complete circle.

6) Brush the top of the formed dough with beaten egg and dip into the plate of sesame seeds.

7) Place in oven and bake for about 15 minutes, or until tops are golden.
