Fighting Depression With A Camera Click
VANCOUVER, B.C. (September 30th, 2015) – Mental Illness Awareness Week takes place next week (October 4th to 10th) and with depression often still a taboo topic that individuals or families deal with behind closed doors, one Vancouver man is working to change that.
Through The One Project, Bryce Evans wants to build a global community, who will use photography to express how they’re feeling, and start a conversation about their journey. The One Project will give those affected by depression and anxiety a way to tell their story through photos, as well as connect with others who can relate and partner with professionals who can provide support, online tools and resources to help them deal with their condition.
“We know through personal experience there’s an emotional connection to photography and capturing images and that can be very therapeutic when it comes to dealing with mental illness,” says Evans. “The One Project not only aims to help that process, but we want to work on collaborative ideas, where members of our community can contribute to improving mental health awareness and resources through images, experiences and shared information.”
Using the hashtag #StoryMeet, and The One Project’s exhibitions, community members around the world have already been able to participate in projects in Vancouver, Calgary, in Italy and across the U.S.
A Kickstarter campaign to support the online framework necessary for a global project will take place Thursday, October 1st, at The Beaumont Studios, 316 W. 5th Avenue, Vancouver from 8pm. It’s free to attend, but you can RSVP here: http://launch.theoneproject.ca/
“Photography saved my life,” says Evans. “I want others who are suffering from depression and anxiety to experience the power of photography that gave me another chance.”
