A Greek Take on BLTs: Hold the Mayo and Try Tzatziki Sauce
Tzatziki, a savory mixture of Greek yogurt, cucumber, garlic and salt, creates a healthy mayonnaise alterative for your BLT sandwiches. Try it on Kontos flatbread for a real Mediterranean treat.
The next time you find yourself in the mood for a bacon, lettuce and tomato (BLT) sandwich, why not try giving it a bit of Mediterranean pizazz? This Greek-inspired BLT swaps out mayo and white toast for Kontos Tzatziki sauce and “Greek Lifestyle” Flatbread, creating a lower fat, higher protein and lower carbohydrate alternative to the traditional American BLT.
With this recipe, the American luncheonette meets Greek taverna. According to Kontos Foods Executive Chef Demetrios Haralambatos, the Greek BLT recipe has two better-for-you ingredients: Tzatziki sauce, the high protein, low-fat Greek-yogurt based mayonnaise alternative, and the Kontos Greek Lifestyle Flatbread, which offers 2x the protein, half the carbs, and fewer calories than other flatbreads.
Here’s the simple recipe, which makes four servings:
Ingredients:
12 slices Applewood Smoked Bacon
½ cup Kontos Tzatziki sauce (contains Greek yogurt, cucumber, garlic, oil, and salt)
4 pieces Kontos Greek Lifestyle Flatbread
Extra Virgin Olive Oil, for brushing the bread
1 ½ cups Baby Arugula
2 ripe Tomatoes (heirloom if available)
Salt & Pepper to taste

“The Greek BLT brings the best ingredients together in a satisfying, delicious and better-for-you sandwich treat, with the healthful benefits of Greek yogurt, an extra dose of protein, and the winning flavor combination of bacon, fresh arugula, tomato and garlic. As we say in Greek, kali orexi (enjoy your meal)!” said Steve Kontos, vice president of Kontos Foods.
