Educating our hearts and minds
It was a night for compassion, creativity, friendship and building community at Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House on the night of Thursday, February 5, 2015. The energy in the room at these Heart Mind Index project gatherings is always warm, inviting, nurturing, collaborative and fun. We split into groups and each group worked on a project that represented how compassion looked to them. We created activities related to the Heart Mind Index that were the kinds of activities that members of our communities could take part in to spread the word about our endeavor.

There were heirloom conversation pieces, a beautiful memory book of compassion, musical activity ideas, circle time activities for the Family Drop-in Programs, Japanese Group, Spanish Group, Mandarin/Cantonese Group and a board game that focused on encouraging and building the domains of the Heart Mind Index.


 Our event was facilitated by Diane, who is our Director of Family & Senior Programs, and Eva, who is our Community Outreach Coordinator.
 Our goals for the evening…
 Diane and Carrie are hard at work. Their project shows how our hearts connect to each other in their activity for circle time at the Family Drop-ins. They are hoping to create a ripple effect in the community.
 Benelda is from the Multicultural Group at Frog Hollow and Maggie and Li (who isn’t in the picture) are from Thunderbird Community Centre. They created an Heirloom Conversation Piece. They hope to start a conversation about being heard and feeling understood in their Family Drop-in sessions.
 Sakae and Emi represent the Japanese Group and they want our community to embrace and feel through music since music is something anyone and everyone can enjoy.
 Rosina and Alice from the Family Drop-in Program at Hastings Community Centre creating a book centered around compassion that they call “The Memory Book of Compassion”.
 Time for show and tell.
 Jacqueline, Kyra and Rhea put their heads together and invented The Heart-Mind Well-Being board game. It’s a game for ages 2 and up that encourages cooperation instead of competition and is based on the values of the Heart Mind Index.

 Everyone worked hard to present activities that the entire community could feel part of and take part in. The room was buzzing with energy!
 Here’s our Heart-Mind Well-Being Night at Frog Hollow group photo. The greatest thing about the night was that we were all brought together by our passion for giving back to the community. Jennie took amazing and beautiful photos of a really great and fun night!
Every project beautifully represented our desire to change the world one ripple at a time. Our goal is to connect to each other as human beings, from family to community in our neighbourhoods and further beyond our borders to one day encompass our global community.

We loved watching the red carpet for the Oscar’s last night, and the stars did not disappoint! Jennifer Lopez and her décolletage was certainly a hot topic last night. In order to prep your girls for a low cut dress like J Lo’s; try using GOLDFADEN MD’s Doctor’s Scrub Advanced ($98, goldfadenmd.com) combined with warm water in your palms and massage in a circular motion 1-2 times per week or as needed. Rinse with warm water to reveal radiant clear skin. Follow up with glō therapeutics Volumizing Breast Cream ($65, gloprofessional.com) to stimulate blood flow and moisturize the breast area. This leads to higher concentration of lipid accumulation, enhancing curves and encouraging fuller breast volume.

Celebrity hair stylist and E! Style Collective Ambassador, Marc Mena, gave us easy tips on how to get Chrissy Teigen’s bombshell waves from last night! He recommends towel drying hair to create body. Apply a volumizing spray from roots to end, like Keratin Complex Vita Volume ($25, keratincomplex.com), and then blow-dry hair in sections using a round brush. After blow-drying each section, place large rollers in 1 inch sections throughout your hair, leaving them in for 15 minutes. Use Keratin Complex Flex Flow ($25, keratincomplex.com) to create a flexible hold. Using a 1-3/4 inch curling iron, curl hair from mid-shaft to ends on a low heat setting, creating loose waves. Spray hair one last time using the hairspray and run your fingers through the hair to further break up the curls for waves like Chrissy's!

Jennifer Aniston


Jennifer Aniston is known for her classically chic style. Her look last night was no exception! Palladio’s Silk FX Palette in Debutante ($12, palladiobeauty.com) has the perfect eye shadow shades to replicate her makeup at home. Use the top, champagne shade over the lid of the eye, into the inner corner, and on the inner third of the lower lash line. Apply the second, ivory matte shade onto the brow bone to define and lift. Use the third, matte taupe shade as a liner on the lower lash line as well as in the crease of the eyelid. Smudge the darkest shade into the upper lash line to accentuate your liner. Finish off the look with a swipe of Dermelect ‘ME’ Nail Lacquer in Moon Kissed ($14, dermelect.com). Celebrity manicurist Elle recommends using the Dermelect Memento Manicure Extender Top Coat ($16, dermelect.com) to achieve the perfect, long-lasting gel shine on your polish.

Recreate the 50 Shades of Grey star’s lovely, long locks with Mia Beauty’s faux hair ponytail ($30, miabeauty.com), ponytail wrap and clip-in bangs ($15, miabeauty.com). For her pretty pout, a red gloss from Gerard Cosmetics screams red carpet ready: Color Your Smile Lighted Lip Gloss in Summer Sun ($24, gerardcosmetics.com).

Before you run to the next showing and empty your wallet on tickets and snacks, it's wise to look for ways save on viewing these flicks.

Movie theater prices are more expensive than ever, with average ticket prices in 2013 topping out at $8.13, according to the National Association of Theatre Owners. Ticket costs are only the beginning, however, with concession markups reaching 700 percent. Luckily you can avoid paying a premium for the cream-of-the-crop in cinema by following these tips.

1. Marathon It
Got all the time in the world and an AMC Theater nearby? Select locations are showing four of the eight best picture nominees back-to-back on Feb. 21 starting at 10:00 a.m. (the other four were offered on Feb. 14). Passes will cost between $30 and $35 not including concessions and must be purchased in advance. Movies in this lineup are Boyhood, American Sniper, The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything.

2. Go Midweek
Most theaters offer discounted tickets during their slowest days. Both Cinemark and Regal Cinemas offer discount day on Tuesday with all-day tickets starting at $5 plus deals on concessions like a $2 small popcorn. Look for midweek deals at a local restaurant to make it a complete date night or family outing for less.

3. Flaunt Your Status
Students, seniors and even families get special perks at select movie theaters that offer movie savings. Check your local theater's website for information on dates and ticket prices. For example, Cinemark offers a "Seniors Day" on Mondays at participating locations with tickets ranging from $5 to $7 depending on region. AMC offers Senior Day on Tuesdays and Student Days on Thursdays, though these promotions are not offered at every location.

4. Become a Member
If you find yourself at the cinema frequently, theater loyalty programs can really pay off. Most are free and offer cash-back rewards as well as discounts and complimentary upgrades on concessions. Big theater programs include Regal Crown Club and Carmike Rewards, while online ticket provider Fandango also has a loyalty program. The AMC Stubs program has a $12-per-year fee but offers $10 rewards for every $100 spent, plus free upgrades on concessions and waived online purchase fees.

5. Discover Insider Deals
From the your employer to your credit card company to your bank or credit union, you may be eligible for insider discounts including movie passes. For example, Visa Signature cardholders are privy to an exclusive $5 off $25 discount at Fandango, while HFS Federal Credit Union offers members discount movie passes to Regal Cinemas and Hollywood Theaters. TicketsAtWork.com is a corporate benefits program that helps businesses reward and retain employees with discounts on entertainment and more. If your company isn't registered, perhaps you can persuade your HR department to get on board for the deals.

6. Buy in Bulk or Grab Gift Cards
In some parts of the country, it's smarter to bulk buy movie tickets than to pay for them individually. For example, the adult evening ticket rate at Cinemark in Portland, Ore., is $9.75, making the Costco bulk rate of $8.50 per ticket ($85 for a 10-pack) a good deal. In Lexington, KY, however, adult evening tickets run just $6, making it more expensive to go the bulk route. You can also purchase discount movie gift cards from sites like Gift Card Granny to save anywhere from 10 to 25-percent off. For example, you can buy a $50 Regal Cinemas gift card for just $40.

7. Use Movie Coupons
In addition to tickets, concessions take a big bite out of your entertainment budget. To reduce the sting, look for coupons from your favorite websites and from the theaters themselves. For example, moviegoers who place their phone in the silent "CineMode" at Cinemark Theaters receive coupons for concessions. You can find mobile and printable coupons at CouponSherpa.com for various movie theaters (a recently expired Cinemark coupon offered $2 off a large bag of popcorn). Being social will get you deals, too: "Like" Cinemark and Regal Cinemas on Facebook page and receive weekly concession coupons.
