Fashion Week Eyebrow Trends | Celebrity Brow Stylist Joey Healy (N-OBBA)

A BROW BALANCING ACT

Brow guru to the stars Joey Healy recaps the hottest brow trends accessory sashaying down the Autumn/Winter 2013 runways – not shoes, bags or jewelry - but eyebrows! The focus is once again on robust arches; they have dominated the runways for the past few seasons. The trend has advanced for 2013, now it is all about the relationship between the lip and the brow and how they artfully balance one another. Creating tension between the top and bottom hemisphere of the face is the idea here – go bold like the look at Pamella Roland and Vera Wang or go nude like Houghton or Yigal Azrouël, just nowhere in between.

The interpretation: Healy says, this look is all about drama, glamour and confidence. By not relying on eye makeup, the bold brow, bold lip look still looks fresh even with two strong points and does not look overdone. The key with this look is that you cannot wear blush, at most a sheer, natural hint. With bold brows, cheeks and lips together, the look will be more pageant queen and less runway chic. Vera Wang really succeeded at a completely clean eye to balance out the look and Pamella Roland achieved a similar effect by using a soft gold color and continuing it up toward and virtually into the brow and the result was dreamy. This look is about perfectly balancing the top and bottom half of your face and is a great option for night if you are not feeling daring enough for the day.

The makeup method: To start with a clean eye, use concealer and one matte nude shadow or go for a light metallic. For every day wear, blend one eye shadow onto brow bone and avoid a crease color – do not go into the brow bone. As for lip color, go bold – not bright; this is not the time for fuchsia or orange but for oxblood and violet plum.

The brow method: To get a bold brow look, it is best to start with a thick, well-manicured brow. To bulk up your brows, use The Joey Healy Eyebrow Collection Brow Renovation Serum ($125, www.joeyhealy.com) day and night for six weeks, then nightly thereafter. The serum will promote brow growth, allowing you to get the most perfect shape possible. Shape your brows with the new Elite Sculpting Tweezer ($35, www.joeyhealy.com) and fill with a powder, like The Joey Healy Eyebrow Collection Luxe Brow Powder ($28, www.joeyhealy.com) and Duo Brow Brush ($28, www.joeyhealy.com). Choose a powder rather than a pencil to create a denser effect that seems natural and not overly geometric. Brows are brushed up on the runway for an editorial effect but look best off the runway brushed up at a 45 degree angle. Try The Joey Healy Eyebrow Collection Brow Structure Clear Set ($25, www.joeyhealy.com) for a perfect finish.

The interpretation: A tip of the hat to the 1960’s, Brigitte Bardot chic, brows are the focus in this look. The idea here is to avoid mid-tone lips, no brown rose or mauve pink – it is all or nothing. Try sherbets and pastels for lips, like strawberry, peach, latte or nude. This creates an almost androgynous tension between mouth and eyes. It is about intensity and power around the eyes. For eye makeup, one shadow is key, but opt for a slightly richer tone, from burnt almond all the way to chocolate espresso. Play with the drama of this trend, Houghton goes for high-intensity while Yigal Azrouël plays a bit softer.

The makeup method: Use the shadow exclusively on the outer half of your eyes and blend outward creating a whisper of a cat eye. Eye shadow should be blended well and should not look placed on the eye, just an artful indication of color. This will complement the strength of the brow and not look top-heavy. It is also important to make sure the mouth is finished with a non-glossy, non-drying, matte lipstick or lip crayon.

The brow method:  Patiently allow your eyebrows to grow out for a full 3 weeks and book one professional shaping session with an expert who will give you a well-groomed shape to work from. If your brows are not up to par, try The Joey Healy Eyebrow Collection Brow Renovation Serum ($125, www.joeyhealy.com) to help get brows to their finest. After having grown your brows to their maximum, it's time to sharpen them up for definition. Accenting the brows with color will allow you to highlight key points in your shape and give the brow a polished look. With shaping you can only remove hair, but when one embraces “the fill” you can really start to redesign your shape. Go with a powder like The Joey Healy Eyebrow Collection Luxe Brow Powder ($28, www.joeyhealy.com) to give more uniform density to an already well-shaped brow that feels sparse. Whichever brow color you chose, make sure you always use waterproof brow products to ensure everything stays in place throughout the day.

To apply, always start with a small amount of product then build intensity. Never overdraw your shape, just emphasize key points in the brow by making the most of what you have. For powders use a stiff, angled brush for control like The Joey Healy Eyebrow Collection Duo Brow Brush ($28, www.joeyhealy.com). Brushing through the brow several times at the end of a fill creates a more effortless looking result. To finish always set with a non-crunchy clear gel for hold like the Brow Structure Clear Set ($25, www.joeyhealy.com). This will help to groom unruly brows into submission if they attempt to make a run for it in different directions! Avoid using dense wax-based setting products which are difficult to apply, melt easily and give eyebrow hair a stuck together look.
