The Whole Fish by Maria Finn

The Whole Fish: How Adventurous Eating of Seafood Can Make You Healthier, Sexier, and Help Save the Ocean

Ever wonder how adventurous eating could improve your sex life and save the ocean? In The Whole Fish Maria Finn shares her stories, experiences and research from time spent on commercial fishing boats and as a food-writer to highlight the importance of sustainable seafood.

Finn believes that we must broaden our gastro-horizons to heal the environment and improve our health. We can do this by adopting the "whole fish" cooking trend, which means consuming the entire animal— including the skin and bones.

Understanding that is a shocking proposal for Western consumers, Finn guides readers through the process with factoids on health, brain and sex-drive benefits alongside recipes for things like fish bacon and fish head soup from top chefs.

I received a digital PDF copy of the book to review and I really enjoyed it. Seafood is one of the healthiest foods you can eat, but the choices we make when we enjoy it are not just sensory. It's an approach that can not only improve your heath, happiness, and sex life, but also help save the complex ecosystem that supports the ocean.

Looks like a lot to read, but it's interesting to gain some more knowledge about the kinds of fish we eat: where they from, when they spawn, where they come from, and photo references of the different species of fish.

In addition to sharing the health and libido benefits of seafood, Finn covers sustainability issues like hatcheries, fish farming and ranching, pollution as well as the role of restaurants and consumers in the ecosystem. As consumers, we must broaden our gastro-horizons and heal the damage to our waterways. We can do this by adopting the "gill to adipose fin" cooking trend, which means buying a whole fish and using the entire animal—make fish head soup, broil collars, brine eggs, bake skins for "fish bacon," and dry bones for grinding into "salt" or smoking for stock.

The Whole Fish also includes recipes from top chefs to guide readers on this voyage through the heads, hearts and bellies of fish.
