Nature Photography: Dragonfly vs. Damselfly

I don't like bugs, but dragonflies are one of my favorites because they are friendly and beautiful with those double wings. I've taken many photographs in the past and I've been calling them dragonflies all these years.

I've finally learned that there is another similar species and they are called damselflies. What's the difference you wonder? Here are the differences:

An adult DRAGONFLY...
  • has a larger body
  • has large eyes that lie flat against the head (so big that they meet in the middle at the top of the head)
  • has its wings open when resting

An adult DAMSELFLY...
  • has a narrow thorax the same width as the abdomen
  • has eyes that are rounded and are apart (protrude at the sides)
  • has its wings closed (or slightly closed) when resting

  1. That's awesome! I never knew there're two species.
I'll try to find out with we have both in Brazil
