Prepping for Super Bowl XLVI

Super Bowl excitement is hitting fever-pitch this week for both New York Giants and New England Patriots fans who hope their team hoists the Vince Lombardi Trophy at the end of Super Bowl XLVI. The game, held in Indianapolis on Feb. 5, will pit two of the nation’s best quarterbacks – Eli Manning and Tom Brady – against each other.

For football fans, the game is eerily similar to the 2008 Super Bowl, the last time the two teams met in the postseason championship. That’s when the wild-card Giants led by a then-struggling Manning defeated the heavily favored Patriots, 17-14.

But, you don’t have to be a history buff or a football junkie to enjoy the Super Bowl. For most people, Super Bowl Sunday is a time to gather with family and friends, play a myriad of Super Bowl games, watch the latest TV commercials, and eat tasty snacks.

Check out our Super Bowl Viewing Guide, so you can watch the game in style and toss out a few football facts to wow partygoers.

THE GAME:

The Giants, this year’s NFC Champions, defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 20-17, in overtime to claim a place in the Super Bowl. The game, an intense back-and-forth competition in less-than-ideal conditions, came down to a field goal. The Patriots defeated the Baltimore Ravens 23-20 to reach the championship game. With eleven seconds remaining in the game, a missed field goal prevented the game from going into overtime.

“That was a tremendous football game for those that really enjoy football in its very basic element,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin told reporters after the game. “At times it’s very difficult to contain yourself. We’ve played an awful lot of superior football teams this year and down the stretch that certainly has helped.”

Tom Brady promised Patriots fans that the team would display a much-improved performance on Super Bowl Sunday. “Our defense saved us [today],” Brady said during the post-game ceremony. “And I’m going to try and go out and do a better job in a couple of weeks, but I’m proud of this team. We’re going to go out and kick some butt in a couple weeks.”

PROJECTED OUTCOME:

Although the Giants won (24-20) when the teams played against each other earlier this year and claimed the title in 2008, the Patriots are still favored to win the Vince Lombardi Trophy by a three-point spread.
